Fisheries Activities
INTRODUCTION
Puri District is one of the coastal district in Orissa having
vast potential of Fisheries resources under inland & Brakishdwater,
sector. In order to look out the inland Fisheries activities alongwith
FFDA/BFDA sector work the Dist. Fisheries Officer-cum-Chiefr Executive
Officer, BFDA & FFDA has been established. The District office is
implementing the project in an effective manner and introducing improved
techniques of Fish/prawn culture as well as fish breeding method to
enhance the fish/prawn production in a progressive manner with the
following objectives.
Objectives:
- (a) To reclaim and bring all fallow lands such as swamps, jhills,
silted water logged areas to a culturable condition in
scientific manner.
- (b) To strengthen rural economy by providing self employment
opportunities to the rural people.
- (c) Impart training to Fish/prawn farmers to make them adopt modern techniques.
- (d) To prepare feasible schemes, involve financial institution to provide credit support for tank development.
- (e) To built up trained personals of fish farmers to undetake intensive fish/prawn culture and fish breeding.
- (f) To introduce polyculture to increase the income of the fish farmers.
- (g) To introduce new schemes such as wetland development ,integrated farming system,ornamental fish breeding,production of spawn & fry in private sector.
- (hProduction of quality seed in departmental fish farm and to cater the fish seed demand of the Dist.
(i) Formation of Cooperative Societies to avail sairats and exploit the fish.
(j) To provide financial assistance to Fish farmer in shape of subsidy through the Agency i.e. 46,000/- per hect. under FFDA and Rs.30,000/- per ha.Under BFDA sector.
- II. FISH SEED HATCHERY
There is only one fish seed hatchery in departmental
sector with a capacity of 500 lakh spawn production and 40 lakh
fry production in Puri Sadar Block. Besides one more fish seed
hatchery with a product capacity of 500 lakh spawn and 30 lakh
fry in private sector has been developed during 1998 in Gop Block
through Bank Finance under FFDA.
